For a lot of people, Banana Fish is a timeless classic shounen-ai manga that finally received its anime adaptation in 2018. It is set in New York City of all places and does an excellent job with the subways, cities, and all the street atmosphere the 17-year-old main character, Ash, would see being the "boss" of his own gang.
Let me start by saying this anime is rated R+17, it does cover triggering topics including sexual assault, drugs, child sex trafficking, and violence (Ash has a rough life). If this is your jam (obviously not the child sex trafficking part, chill out FBI) go watch it, you will not be disappointed at least until the last episode.
It is honestly, a masterful piece of art that needed the sequel release as well, but as a devote otaku, we are regularly disappointed by only having one season.
Another amazing part of Banana Fish is the "friendship" between Ash and Eiji. I use "friendship" the same way Haruna and Michiru were "cousins" in Sailor Moon. They are more like soulmates who did not understand that they were in love. Eiji, the naive Japanese boy, and Ash, the beautiful genius cursed by his past and ability to kill without hesitation.
Overall, the anime is completely worth the watch and I really recommend watching it for free on Amazon Prime Video.
