If there is one thing I will say about Austin, that is the food variety is 10/10! This is our second trip to Austin in a year so we are already past the famous BBQ moving on the discovery what else they have to offer.
First and foremost, glorious H-Mart, your neighborhood Asian Mart with a phenomenal food court, AMAZING chicken wings (so good they did not last long enough for a photo 😅), a stage for performances ( post-COVID), an extensive array of grocery items, and K-pop merchandise! If I lived near H-Mart I would be there weekly for the canned boba tea, fresh sushi, Hanami Dango (pictured), and again that oh so crispy fried chicken. I cannot wait to go back.
Next up was a convenient day trip about an hour south of Austin to San Antonio. I kept hearing great things about the area so we decided to hit their Historic Market Square where there were 100s of authentic Mexican shops, restaurants, and drinks all around you. I got a gargantuan lemonade the size of a soup Tupperware for $6! I would recommend getting cash before coming because a lot of vendors only take cash. The nostalgia of $1 chili candies and fresh horchata definitely makes this market worthwhile. Make sure to wear sunscreen because it is a hot one!
After vigorously working out way through the slightly overpriced Riverwalk, we made it to the older restaurant in San Antonio, Schilo's. The wait is outrageous averaging about an hour and a half on weekends so make sure to get your name on the list as early as possible. However, in my opinion, and food and drinks are well worth it. Their iconic root beer can be ordered by the pitcher with pre-chilled frosted mugs and it is sweet and crisp to the taste. Their sandwiches are quite large, satisfying the famine and fatigue the long wait created, and the desserts are worth every bite made fresh inhouse. I would definitely go back to try them again.
Stay tuned for your Houston adventures up next! Happy Eating!
